In 2017, with the assistance of the Provincial Government, through Flood Recovery and Erosion Control (“FREC”) program, the Town has purchased approximately 5.3 acres adjacent to the Sheep River on the North West entrance to Community.
Over the next week, McCann Building Movers will be in Town, moving the buildings which are currently located on this property. They are moving these buildings at no charge to the Town. Demolition and reclamation of the site will be occurring over the next few weeks. Funding for this project has been in partnership with the Province of Alberta, (FREC funding) and the Canadian Red Cross.
The Town has also partnered with the Canadian Red Cross and the Province of Alberta to assist in providing further flood mitigation in this area. As some of you may remember, this area was affected during the 2013 Flood. Mitigation work will be taking place at that location over the next year.
A Water Act application has been submitted to Alberta Environment to provide further mitigation efforts in the form of “bioengineering” in that area. Bioengineering promotes bank stabilization and erosion control, the creation of fish and wildlife habitat, water quality improvement and increased resiliency to future flood and droughts.
The Town of Black Diamond gratefully acknowledges the financial contributions of both the Province of Alberta (FREC) and the Canadian Red Cross. Funding from both organizations made this purchase possible, as well as the reclamation and flood mitigation projects.
