Outdoor Recreation

Friendship Trail

This gentle 3 km paved trail linking Black Diamond with Turner Valley is popular among walkers, joggers and cyclists. The trail runs on the north side of Highway 22 and passes scenic view points, secluded rest areas and the site of the old McPherson coal mine which inspired Black Diamond's name. Impressive rock formations along the trail speak to the area's remarkable geology that sustained the Turner Valley oilfields boom during the 1920's to 1940's.

The Sheep River runs directly through both the towns of Turner Valley and Black Diamond and is excellent for family fishing. Other fishing spots in the vicinity include the Highwood River, Cataract Creek and Chain Lakes. Please refer to the official Alberta Government website for current conditions, regulations and information on fishing in specific locations.

Kananaskis Country

Only a short drive to both the mountains and the prairie, the Black Diamond area abounds in outdoor recreation opportunities like few other places. Twenty minutes west of town is Kananaskis Country, a Rocky Mountain playground for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park offers numerous hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, camping and cross-country skiing opportunities.
Effective June 1, 2021 a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for all vehicles stopping in Kananaskis Country and provincial sites in the Bow Valley Corridor.  A geographical boundary map is available for the full list of sites.
